Access Changes Announced for Outlook Web App and Virtual Private Network

Recently, some UA NetIDs and passwords have been compromised and used to send large amounts of spam and this has caused some University of Arizona emails to be blocked by external email systems.  These actions have prevented university employees and departments from efficiently conducting campus business such as contacting prospective students; parents and students from paying their tuition; and UA employees from contacting colleagues at other universities.

To enhance network security at the University of Arizona, University Information Technology Services (UITS) will be implementing NetID+ for Outlook Web App<http://uits.arizona.edu/uaconnect/owa> (OWA) and Virtual Private Network<http://uits.arizona.edu/services/vpn> (VPN) which will change the way faculty, staff and students access these services.

Access changes will occur as follows:

Outlook Web App

•         On November 17, UITS will be instituting NetID+ for Outlook Web App.

•         OWA users who have opted in<https://webauth.arizona.edu/netid-plus/> to NetID+ will be prompted with 2-factor credentials upon login.

•         Users who have not registered for NetID+ will access OWA without any changes until mid-April.

•         By mid-April 2015 NetID+ will be required for all UA faculty and staff to access OWA.


Virtual Private Network

•         By the end of January 2015, colleges with defined Virtual Private Network profiles for specific user groups will be required to use NetID+ to access departmental VPN profiles.

•         The UITS Network team will be contacting the owners of departmental VPN profiles over the next two months to create new profiles and schedule the transition to NetID+ deployment for departmental VPN profiles.

•         More specific information including instructions and documentation will be provided to help departmental VPN user groups transition to NetID+.

•         By mid-April 2015, NetID+ will be required for all faculty, staff and students to access VPN services at the University of Arizona.
