Shelton's Tenure Draws to a Close ... Now What?

Eugene G. Sander will take over as UA president on an interim basis on Aug. 1.

As President Robert N. Shelton prepares to leave the UA for his new position as executive director of the Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix, the University of Arizona enters a transition period that might leave some members of the campus community feeling a bit uncertain about the future. But as President-Designate Eugene Sander prepares to take over the University's top job on an interim basis on Aug. 1, he's assuring UA employees and students that the institution will persevere and thrive.

"In terms of the overall functioning of this university, we're strong, we're solid, we're prepared," said Sander, who was named to succeed Shelton on an interim basis by the Arizona Board of Regents on June 18.

"When you have a situation like the loss of a president in a relatively short period of time and unexpectedly, you'll have to do some work to assure everybody that life goes on," he said. "I think considering my experience at the University – I've been here a long time, I know a lot of people – I think that will help assure people that the lights aren't going to get turned off."

The 75-year-old Sander, who has served as dean of the UA's <http://cals.arizona.edu/main/> College of Agriculture and Life Sciences since 1987, was preparing to retire in July before being tapped to lead the University during a search for a permanent president. A man who says he "bleeds red and blue," Sander has worn many hats during his long UA career, including that of executive vice president and provost from July 2007 to April 2008 and vice president for outreach for two years. He also has been actively involved with fundraising and is credited with raising more than $150 million in private gifts for his college. His wife, Louise Canfield Sander, is a retired UA professor. Sander: Won't be a Year of 'Inertia'

Sander has expressed that his time as president will not be a year of inertia.

"You just cannot let any major organization, be it a company or a university or anything, just sit and languish," he said.

"My principal goal during this next year will be to make sure that we have a very successful retention plan. I'm not interested in losing any more people and I will go to quite drastic lengths to make sure that that doesn't happen," he said.

Sander said he will focus on better communication with the UA's strong faculty as well as classified staff and appointed personnel. One of his first moves in August will be to appoint staff and appointed personnel leaders to the president's cabinet <http://www.president.arizona.edu/presidents_cabinet> , he said.

He also plans to hold open forums every couple of weeks, where employees, students and community members can ask him questions on any subject, he said.

Search Process

As far as the search for a permanent UA president, that will be left to the <http://www.azregents.edu/> Arizona Board of Regents, which is expected to approve official guidelines for a search at the board's Aug. 4-5 meeting in Tempe. The proposed guidelines will be included in the regents' board book, which will be available on the ABOR website on July 27.

A <http://www.azregents.edu/uapressearch/uapressearch.aspx> UA presidential search web page, where interested individuals can find information on the search as it becomes available or express comments, questions or concerns about the search is now online. The search process is expected to take about a year.

So how does a new president get chosen?

First, a regents committee will select a search consulting firm that will work with the presidential search committee. The presidential search committee will be chaired by Regents Dennis DeConcini and Rick Myer. Additional membership of the committee, along with its size and structure, is now under consideration and a public announcement of the committee is expected in the next one to two months, said Katie Paquet, spokeswoman for the Arizona Board of Regents.

The committee will then conduct a search, by developing a statement of qualifications, screening applications, identifying prospects and ultimately narrowing candidates down to a list of three to five names to be made public. After these finalists visit campus to meet with institutional leadership, the search committee will make a recommendation to the board of regents, which will select the final candidate. That decision is expected to be made by next spring or early summer, Paquet said.

Some Uncertainty 'To Be Expected'

Bill Bowen, the <http://uafoundation.org/> UA Foundation's special counsel to the president for board relations, has some experience with presidential searches. He worked for 28 years with the executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles and participated in searches for more than 200 university and college presidents, including UA President Emeritus Peter Likins, former Arizona State University President Lattie Coor and current ASU president Michael Crow.

As the search for Shelton's successor gets under way, Bowen said it will be important for the regents to select a search consultant who will work to understand the UA's unique needs, goals and challenges.

"Different institutions have different personalities, just like we all have different fingerprints," said Bowen, who is also an executive in residence in the Eller College of Management's <http://econ.arizona.edu/> department of economics.

He stressed that a good search committee will work on the behalf all constituents of a university and said the campus community should try to be patient and helpful as the search progresses.

Although a climate of some uncertainty is to be expected at a university awaiting appointment of a permanent leader, Bowen said the appointment of a familiar face like Sander should help with the transition.

"Just his presence alone helps reduce some of the uncertainty because there's a known entity holding down the fort," he said.

Sander said his fundamental job during his time as president will be "to make sure that this university appears as a very attractive place for a new leader to come in and take us to the next step."

"My goal is to make sure that we're able to take the next step with an outstanding young president who really will be able to move us forward over a prolonged period of time," he said.
