Subject: Information about Offensive Email

To: UA Campus Community

From: Michele Norin, Chief Information Officer

As many of you have likely already witnessed late yesterday evening someone sent an incredibly offensive email message to the listserv that is reserved for administrative communications with all UA Employees. I write today to offer a sincere apology and explanation regarding the situation.

By using an off shore server the perpetrator of this act was able to mask his or her identity and pretend to be one of the very few individuals with permission to transmit messages to this listserv. UITS’s team worked feverishly throughout the night to remove as many offending messages as possible and to prevent future delivery of any such messages.

As noted this listserv is reserved for the exclusive use of administration to transmit messages of broad interest and importance. We appreciate that you rely on us to insure that this listserv contain only official business of broad interest or impact and acknowledge that in this case we have come up short.

Additionally, many users who are already on UAConnect received a number of unwanted messages yesterday as some in our community discussed a particular topic or tested their ability to post. Their ability to do this is something that we failed to anticipate and have since taken action to prevent.

Again I offer a sincere apology for the impact this and other messages may have had on you and offer our assurance that we are doing everything we can to prevent any future recurrence.
