Dear all,
Yesterday (15 March) was the deadline for written contributions to the UN Special Rapporteur (SR) on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, Jose Francisco Cali Tzay, for his thematic report on "The Situation of Mobile Indigenous Peoples” to be presented at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in October 2024. Info about this was sent earlier. However, 5-minute oral inputs are still possible during two online consultation sessions on Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 March 2024.
The discussion will address the situation of pastoralists, hunter-gatherers, shifting crop-farmers and other mobile peoples who self-identify as Indigenous. The report will examine the impacts of extractive, tourism, conservation, climate change and green financing projects, as well as discriminatory laws, and other activities and practices on the collective rights of mobile IPs. The particular situation of transboundary mobile IPs will be considered, whose ancestral territories span national borders and who encounter discrimination, displacement, lack of recognition, restricted freedom of movement and limited access to basic services.
There will be two consultation sessions for people in different time zones:
SESSION 1: 19 March 2024 at 8:00 MST/15:00 GMT/16:00 CET/18:00 EAT
SESSION 2: 20 March 2024 at 8:00 Kyrgyzstan/10:00 Mongolia/19:00 MST
You can register here and offer your inputs to the SR’s report:
English: https://lnkd.in/eB_EjjzH <https://lnkd.in/eB_EjjzH>
French: https://lnkd.in/exWqZ-Db <https://lnkd.in/exWqZ-Db>
Spanish: https://lnkd.in/e92UM88J <https://lnkd.in/e92UM88J>
As priority will probably be given to mobile IPs themselves to provide oral inputs, it would be particularly important that people from pastoralist organisations register for these consultations.
“See” you next week during at least the first session, for which I have already registered,
Ann

> The call is specifically about the situation of mobile IPs, e.g. pastoralists, and explicitly refers to the IYRP2026:
>
> The United Nations has taken a number of actions that address the rights of mobile Indigenous Peoples …. At the request of pastoralists, NGOs, research institutions and governmental organisations, the General Assembly declared 2026 the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists to be facilitated by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

> Please submit relevant information in English, French or Spanish to hrc-sr-indigenous at un.org <mailto:hrc-sr-indigenous at un.org> by 15 March 2024. Particularly the IYRP Working Group on Land will hopefully be able to respond to this call so quickly.
