Dear Friends,

Greetings!

We invite you to be part of our family for the celebration of “World
Maldhari (pastoral) day” on 26th November, 2021.

We celebrate this day to commemorate the MERA Declaration of Global
Gathering of women Pastoralists held from November 21 to 26 in 2010.
Pastoral women from 32 countries met at Mera village in Gujarat to
strengthen the alliance and bring practical solutions to the issues that
affect the community.

Pastoralists are people who stay close to nature, unfortunately now they
don’t have control over resources on which their livelihood depends. They
have also become victims of the politics of nomenclature that is reflected
in conversion of pastureland into wasteland.

We have been celebrating this day for the last 10 years, but this year is a
turning point for us as we move a step closer towards the call to the UN to
declare the year 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands and
Pastoralists. We expect that by then, our issues which include – shrinking
pasturelands, loss of traditional livestock, rising milk prices,
corporatisation of dairies/milk parlours, lack of the accountability of the
government – would be sorted.

On this day, moving beyond region, religion, political ideology and any
such thing that segregates us, we come together to pledge for a future
where our goals of the MERA declaration are brought to reality.

It’s our day, organised by us to welcome ideas and make the policy makers
realise our existence to include us into the policies for our better future.
