Dear Ann and IYRP support group,
Thank you for sharing the outcome of this exercise. Though, it is a simple tool but does show the understanding of our communities when we refer to rangelands.
I believe this exercise has given us what we need for now to communicate with the wider circle (society / public) and this in the short-term.
However, the other lesson we take from this exercise is how we as a community working closely in this field perceives rangelands. From the picture generated by the word cloud about rangelands, unfortunately, the reference to rangelands as grazing lands is still the dominant one. In my opinion, we really need to work harder to change this narrow perception as rangelands do offer society much more than just forage for livestock. The starting point should be us otherwise nothing will change. And as long as we consider rangelands as "free" grazingland their degradation and marginalization will continue.
Anyway, this is just my opinion (not ICARDA) which I strongly believe in, and I am hoping one day the numerous benefits from rangelands (ecosystem goods and services) are reflected in every mindset .
Thank you again for your efforts which I found genuine using smart technology to get a clear picture of where we stand now.
Best regards,
Mounir

Subject: [IYRPsupportgroup] IYRP: Word Clouds for "Rangelands" and "Pastoralist" - May 2021
Dear IYRP ISG members,
Here are two Word Clouds that show how many different names there are for "rangelands" and "pastoralist" around the world (in English, more or less). We hope that this will help to harmonise how we communicate and what we mean when we use these two words in our efforts to raise awareness for the IYRP. We expect countries and people to continue using the words they feel most comfortable with and, through these two images, to be able to communicate with others effectively.
The words included in the Clouds were suggested by 74 people responding to an online survey distributed to the ISG and RISGs. The top three Search Engines chosen were: Google (46%), Bing (18%) and Yahoo (7%). Only Google was searched in preparation of these graphics, as it is not possible to combine results electronically from different search engines. Some words suggested by respondents were not included either because they did not get any hits on Google or because they got too few to appear on the image. The size of each word reflects how commonly the word is used in information contained in Google as of May 2021. The search was done only in the English language.
We thank Barbara Hutchinson, Sheila Merrigan and Maria del Carme Aranguren from the University of Arizona for helping to prepare these images.
We encourage the RISGs to prepare similar Word Clouds in other languages and to share them with us for the website.
By 2026, these Word Clouds may look somewhat different - that will make for an interesting comparison.
All the best,
Maryam and Ann
