IYRP side event at HLPF, 6 July 2021, New York

"Sustainable pastoralism and rangelands: impacts of COVID, and how not to leave them behind in the 2030 Agenda”

Organised by the Government of Mongolia and the International Support Group for the International Year of Rangelands & Pastoralists (https://iyrp.info <https://www.youtube.com/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbC1DTGhpeHdrVElhbUlSSnY4Ty1VNmp3aTdJZ3xBQ3Jtc0traXR5VXZ4WXQwbWpmekNwQVpyNk9maURBSXlHTFZfVFI1Vm5NaHNMYzEyd1ZrcHc1UXdCQ082U1hCaVlmTS02UC1FSWRFQUpla2VsekJ4akpxc0JaeE5udWhueHc4Si12eVBGaXZSTjJ1empiTzFxbw&q=https%3A%2F%2Fiyrp.info>).

Integrity and productivity of ecosystem goods and services from rangelands are critical to the livelihoods of over half a billion people in over 100 countries worldwide. Pastoralists play a key role in the stewardship, conservation and sustainable management of rangelands that cover more than half of the earth’s land mass. Innovative solutions exist for achieving sustainable pastoralism that generate benefits in all SDGs and synergistically integrate them. Pastoralists are not just victims but also strong allies who can play a vital role in facing global challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change.

Proclamation of an International Year of Rangelands & Pastoralists (IYRP) in 2026 during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is expected to raise awareness of these issues worldwide, fill knowledge gaps and spur a stronger momentum toward finding innovative solutions for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
