And yaaay! We were one of the 7 winners announced last night who will receive 100,000usd. In fact the person who announced us as a winner very much appreciated the big data gap in rangelands and what this platform could contribute towards it - so it was clear that there was strong support. 


It is not a lot of money to set up a global rangelands data platform but at least it is a start, and we already have some interest from another donor.  We want to see the platform owned by no single organisation but rather,  shared by all of us as supporting, working and living in rangelands - and I believe if we work together and share data and datasets already existing we will  be surprised how much data is already available, as well as identify the major gaps to fill.  We are also very keen to see how we can develop crowd-sourcing ways of collecting relevant data from pastoralists and pastoralists networks/unions bearing in mind any cautions of sharing such data in a global platform.


We will be working with a commercial company GMV who have a lot of experience to help us set up the most useful platform but for sure this needs to be done in consultation with everyone for thoughts and ideas. So we will be in touch soon.


I would be happy to count this as a IYRP-project - so we can include in future information as a financial contribution to the year. 


One immediate thing I would like to do is to set up an Advisory Group for the platform of high-profile multi-stakeholders/people who have experience of working with and using big data. Please send me privately any thoughts of who might be good to include here.

Just to let you know that we/ILRI put in a proposal to the CGIAR Big Data platform for 100,000usd to kick-start the establishment of a global data platform on rangelands to be developed with partners. We are through to the final selection, our pre-filmed pitches will be presented tomorrow afternoon, and then final decision will be made on Friday evening.
