Many thanks, Gregorio, and congratulations on such a timely and important document.

It has a huge gap, however.

No mention is made about the economic benefits of wildlife-related tourism, which just in the US generates yearly an economy of $80 billion US (latest report: USFWS et al., 2016<https://www.fws.gov/wsfrprograms/Subpages/NationalSurvey/nat_survey2016.pdf>).  US birdwatchers contribute to the rapidly growing nature-based  tourism sector in Argentina- one of the countries assessed in your study.

In the context of the 2026 International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists  (IYRP) I think this is an amazing opportunity for FAO to help  make the case about the contribution of wildlife in all its accounting related to the sound use of the grasslands and rangelands …and let the world know about it.

Over the last 60 yrs of census work, we know that grassland birds are declining the most throughout North America (Canada, US and Mx). Very likely this trend is happening in most other regions of the world  where grassland birds have become one of the best indicators of the status of this most threatened ecosystem.

Hopefully next time FAO talks to Birdlife international or WWF or any of our IYRP partners, and incorporates the all-important wildlife component, which goes hand-in-hand with the actual and potential economic benefits of sustainable grassland and rangeland use to pastoralists and to the nations´ economies.

Many of us in this group can gladly help you fill the gap.

FAO and CIRAD just released

“The economics of pastoralism.
Market participation and multiple livelihood strategies
in a shock-prone environment”





With Argentina, Chad and Mongolia as pilot cases, this study by CIRAD, commissioned by FAO, funded by IFAD and facilitated by pastoralist associations (Fundación Gran Chaco, Réseau Billital Maroobé, and the National Federation of Pasture User Groups), aimed to fulfil the knowledge gap about the economics of pastoralism, through a multifunctional assessment of pastoral production systems and their economic contribution.
