[IYRPsupportgroup] Pastoralist NGOs - updates welcome!

Dear Serena,

Discussions about setting up regional groupings to prepare for the IGC/IRP in 2021 and hopefully the IYRP in 2026 are just starting up, so your suggestion fits perfectly into that. Pastoralist organisations in each region could take an active role in celebrating and lobbying for pastoralism (and rangelands) in their areas. I assume that the regional group in, say, Latin America, will communicate in Spanish, which makes communication easier. Ditto re French among the francophone countries in Africa - and other languages in other regions of the world.

Cheers,
Ann

We have periodically updated the table when we managed to obtain additional information. Those pastoralist organisation leaders who responded to our request were included in the International Support Group (see the list under https://globalrangelands.org/international-year-rangelands-and-pastoralists-initiative <https://globalrangelands.org/international-year-rangelands-and-pastoralists-initiative>).

An additional complication is that all of our correspondence is in English, so the pastoralist organisations in francophone countries (and other parts of the world where English is not widely spoken) may not be (well) informed.

That is probably a task for the regional groupings that will be set up to prepare for the IYRP discussions at the IGC/IRC in Nairobi next year (a mail about that went around recently). Perhaps you could help in contacting those in francophone countries of West Africa, if you decide to join that regional group?

I am thinking it might be useful to identify the active pastoralist NGOs in the world and see how we can get them involved. Many of these NGOs have connections into the agricultural ministry in their national government.
