Dear Gregory,
Thanks for yours and this is just to inform you that we tried to popularise IYRP in West Africa. I remember many were attended including NGOs. Hope the communication will continue from the IYRP Support Group. The below is Ann's communication regarding one of our efforts in West Africa.

FYI - just posted on the CELEP website:

IYRP promoted at pastoralism conference in Burkina Faso
At the Conference on Pastoralism and Rangelands Restoration on 19-20 June 2019 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Tezera Getahun from Pastoralist Forum Ethiopia (PFE) – a member of the IYRP Support Group and member of the CELEP Core Group – presented the call for a United Nations International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP). He explained how the idea of an IYRP emerged and evolved, and how the Government of Mongolia – supported by Ethiopia – took the lead in submitting a formal resolution to FAO’s Committee of Agriculture calling for an IYRP. He shared information about the global importance of rangelands and pastoralists, the rationale for a year to celebrate them, and some of the activities foreseen. The PPT can be found here.

Dear Greg,
Quite some time ago, we drew up a list of pastoralist organisations that cover more than one country (umbrella organisations) and tried to inform them about the IYRP. We have periodically updated the table when we managed to obtain additional information. Those pastoralist organisation leaders who responded to our request were included in the International Support Group (see the list under https://globalrangelands.org/international-year-rangelands-and-pastoralists-initiative).
However, I fear that, in some cases, information that goes to the umbrella organisation does not always go to the member organisations under the umbrella. An additional complication is that all of our correspondence is in English, so the pastoralist organisations in francophone countries (and other parts of the world where English is not widely spoken) may not be (well) informed.
Attached is the current version of the table. Perhaps we should start identifying and contacting also the national pastoralist organisations? That is probably a task for the regional groupings that will be set up to prepare for the IYRP discussions at the IGC/IRC in Nairobi next year (a mail about that went around recently). Perhaps you could help in contacting those in francophone countries of West Africa, if you decide to join that regional group?
Cheers,Ann

I contacted a few active pastoralist NGOs in West Africa to see if they were aware of the IYRP, and they had not heard of it. I am thinking it might be useful to identify the active pastoralist NGOs in the world and see how we can get them involved. Many of these NGOs have connections into the agricultural ministry in their national government.
