Dear Jim,
Gregorio informed me about this meeting in December and I already sent an abstract in February. And I did include in the abstract that my presentation is going to provide information on IYRP as well. You can see my submission below. The selection process hasn’t finalized yet.
Anyway, I can still attend the meeting even if my proposal doesn’t get approved. If there is any other additional way to promote IYRP and that I can contribute to, let me know.
All the best,
Engin

Title: Mobile Pastoralism as a Retro-innovation for a sustainable future: Increasing global awareness of the value of pastoralists as stewards and strong allies for nature conservation and climate change mitigation & adaptation efforts
Topic: 4.A better life for farmers and shepherds: improving economic returns, social image and working conditions of small ruminant farming.
Oral/Poster: Oral

Abstract: Rangelands and migration routes mobile pastoralists have managed over millennia protect threatened species and habitats, ensure ecological integrity of landscapes and support ecological processes, maintain areas of importance for ecological connectivity, and have critical ecosystem functions such as carbon storage. Mobile pastoralism has direct benefits for water cycle regulation, requires the least fossil fuel energy, reduces incidence of pollution and reliance on veterinary products. Yet they have been also a usual subject of adverse policies, in many cases justified with ill-informed argumentations. The general view among conservationists has been that mobile pastoralism is environmentally harmful and thus incompatible with nature conservation. Particularly in the last century they have suffered from historic injustices such as restrictions to mobility and to access their traditional lands and natural resources etc. This is also the case regarding climate change discussions despite mobile pastoralism’s beneficial role in carbon sequestration, its adaptive nature with its mobility feature etc. and its far less contribution to carbon emissions compared to industrial livestock production systems. Public policies not differentiating between pastoralism and intensive livestock production systems, accuse pastoralists of contributing to climate change. Within this context this presentation will provide information on mobile pastoralism’s beneficial role in conserving biodiversity and in tackling climate change based on scientific research; possible conservation mechanisms that may support empowerment of mobile pastoralists; means to promote mobile pastoralism and to change ill-informed discourses at international level such as the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists initiative.

I think you could also ask other members of the ISG from the Mediterranean area, e.g. Engin from Turkey. He has been very active thus far and is well informed about the IYRP. You could also ask Mounir if he or someone else from ICARDA will be there, as they do a lot of work on sheep and goats in the Mediterranean area. And Maria’s idea of asking Pablo if he is planning to attend is also a good one.

We would need significant coaching on what to say etc. I also think it is worth finding out if any or our Spanish colleagues will be there (e.g. like Pablo Manzano, former WISP leader) who would be good speakers, unless it is best to have a Moroccan present since the meeting is in Morocco.
