Dear Engin
Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. Indeed you are very
right in saying that it is important that we contribute. The Special
Rapporteur for Indigenous Peoples has for a long time championed pastoral
rights, however, their formal reports have not fully captured the diversity
and versatility of mobile pastoral peoples. This is the first time that we
have such an opportunity.
I also want to point out that for the purposes of IYRP 2026, we have
adopted a very broad definition of "mobile pastoralism" - that is why we
have RISGs in all continents. We need to help the UN General Assembly
understand that mobility comes in different forms and has many benefits -
otherwise their report will only be about the negative challenges. Let us
show them both the benefits and the challenges faced by pastoralists all
over the world.
I encourage every RISG to share this information within their networks. It
should also be sent to the ISG list. The more people send in inputs the
better it will be.
All my very best
