Dear CALES Faculty,
If you are involved in (or have interest in becoming involved in) research pertaining to mining in Arizona and the Southwest, you may wish to join this workshop. The workshop pertains to an NSF Regional Innovation Engines<https://new.nsf.gov/funding/initiatives/regional-innovation-engines> proposal, for which a pre-proposal is currently pending with NSF. If the pre-proposal is invited to the full proposal stage, it will present opportunities for collaboration with colleagues in the colleges of Science, Engineering, and Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences, as needed to address issues pertaining to the complete mining lifecycle.
These are large proposals, as each awardee team will receive an initial $15 million over the next two years with the potential to receive up to $160 million each over the next decade. So, join the conversation on October 14 if interested! (RSVP link is below)

Email from Dr. Kray Luxbacher, PI of the pending NSF Preproposal:
Please join us for conversations around the University of Arizona's NSF Regional Innovation Engine Opportunity. We hope you can join us in-person at our workshop for engineering, science, agriculture, life, and environmental sciences on October 14, 2024 (in person only) in ENR 2, room S215 at 9:30 am. We need your expertise!
We will discuss research opportunities, collaborations, and partnerships with industry, government, economic development, and academic partners around ways to decarbonize the mining industry in southern Arizona. Some of the discussions will focus on automation, electrification, battery technology, and other ways to lower energy costs at mines. In addition to these technology focus areas, we'll have key conversations on workforce development, community engagement, and community benefits.
Please consider this invitation transferrable to others, we welcome interested people! We will be having a separate workshop on community engagement and economic development.
