Please see the following message from Taren Ellis Lanford, Senior Director of the Office of Responsible Outside Interests (OROI).  This message pertains to increased scrutiny pertaining conflicts of interest and commitment, and also to research program security, particularly with respect to international activities, much of which derives from the federal Chips and Science Act of 2024. Please note that my office and the OROI are your UA-based resources for conflict related questions and concerns, and that you should turn to us  before reaching out to program officers at funding agencies and other outside entities.

Please ask Investigators to contact the Office for Responsible Outside Interests (OROI) regarding any conflict related questions or inquiries and the Research Security Program (RSP) regarding any research security or foreign affiliation questions or inquiries rather than directly contacting their research sponsor/program officer.  This is beneficial and avoids a potential misunderstanding about conflict/risk concern(s). The most common misunderstandings arise when an Investigator submits a COI statement or position to the sponsor, or an Investigator attempts to resolve a research security concern directly with the sponsor. OROI is the institutional resource for conflict matters and RSP is the institutional resource for research security and foreign affiliation concerns.  Coming directly to OROI (coi at arizona.edu<mailto:coi at arizona.edu>) and RSP (ResearchSecurity at arizona.edu<mailto:ResearchSecurity at arizona.edu>) will minimize the risk of miscommunication and potential negative impact on funding. Thank you for helping us avoid misunderstandings with our sponsors.
