Hi CALES colleagues,

In case you missed it, UA faculty will hold a Meeting of the General Faculty this coming Thursday, April 25, from 3-5 pm on Zoom. It’s really important that everyone attend if at all possible—we’ll be discussing the ongoing financial crisis and the future of faculty governance, which has the potential to shape our entire university for years to come. ALL are welcome (faculty/instructors of all stripes, staff, students, and the public), so please share widely.

The last time we held a Meeting of the General Faculty was in the spring of 2020, at the height of Covid. Over 1700 people attended, and it was instrumental in steering the UA’s responses to the pandemic and the ensuing financial crisis for the better. We hope this week’s coming meeting will have a similar (or greater!) impact on the current crisis.

If you missed it, a few UA colleagues who are organizing the General Assembly published an op-ed<https://tucson.com/opinion/column/local-opinion-faculty-and-staff-not-high-paid-administrators-should-run-the-university-of-arizona/article_e8bfb4a4-fdba-11ee-a9a1-eba239db23ea.html> in the Daily Star that lays out a case for increased faculty and staff governance as a way out of our current mess (PDF attached).

Our shared governance work in CALES has been exceptionally strong–staff, faculty, and administrators have worked very hard together to minimize the impact of financial mismanagement. There remains more work to be done, and we want to continue this and share with others across the university how shared governance strengthens colleges and our academic mission.

Thank you for your continued engagement.

Katie, Bobby, and Tim

Meeting of the General Faculty

Date: Thursday, April 25th, 2024

In line with UA faculty bylaws, a Meeting of the General Faculty is being called by the Chair of the Faculty, Dr. Leila Hudson after Dr. Carol Brochin and Dr. Marv Waterstone obtained the necessary signatures of general faculty members. The purpose of this meeting is to have a campus-wide discussion about the current and future state of our university, including a) our ongoing financial crisis<https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/21/us/university-arizona-budget-deficit.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare> produced by mismanagement from our upper administration, b) the continued need for transparency and accountability, c) the threats against shared governance coming from the Arizona Legislature and ABOR<https://www.insidehighered.com/news/governance/executive-leadership/2024/02/26/university-arizona-budget-fight-heats>, and d) the importance of faculty and faculty governance in choosing higher level administrators and setting policies critical to our academic mission and operations. We believe that we are in a critical moment and need to hear from the general faculty (alongside faculty senators and members of the larger campus community) about the state of our institution in the context of these related emergencies. The Meeting of the General Faculty will focus on providing our community with information about the crisis, from both a financial and shared governance perspective, and will discuss challenges within and outside of our university. It will also move us forward in ensuring that our right to faculty-led shared governance remains and that we can work alongside our senior administrators for the well-being of our university.

Agenda:

  1. Introductions
  2. Community Voices
  3. Presentation of Financial Mismanagement Crisis
  4. Statement of Impact on our University Mission
  5. Shared Governance Presentation
  6. Q&A
  7. Closing
