Subject: Arizona Transportation Institute (AzTI)
Dear UA/ASU/NAU Colleagues,
We are excited to announce the establishment of the Arizona Transportation Institute (AzTI) (pending final approval by ABOR), which is the result of a collaborative effort between the University of Arizona (UA), Arizona State University (ASU), Northern Arizona University (NAU), and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) over the past two years. The institute aims to facilitate transportation research across the three state universities, catalyze transportation innovation through research, and contribute to workforce development in Arizona.
The primary objectives of AzTI include:
* Effectively address ADOT's transportation research needs and drive innovation through collaborative research, resource transparency, and streamlined research processes.
* Facilitate collaboration to pursue other nationwide and regional funding opportunities that can contribute to the improvement of Arizona's transportation system and facilities.
* Support economic growth and vitality through improvements to promote safer and more accessible communities.
* Facilitate cross-agency collaboration among local, regional, and state transportation agencies and those related to transportation and mobility.
Although additional details will be provided at a later date, we would also like to announce the first round of research projects that will be administered through AzTI. Once the official request for proposals is announced, faculty at all three state universities will be eligible to submit proposals. Multi-institutional collaboration will be highly encouraged, though not required. These first seven projects are listed below:
* SPR-787: Assessment of Asphalt Shear Rutting Test Method to Improve the Performance of ADOT Asphalt Mixes
* SPR-788: Assessing the Consumption Costs of Motor Vehicles on Arizona Roads and Bridges
* SPR 789: Development of Arizona-Specific Crash Modification Factors
* SPR 790: Expanding the Capability of Arizona's Statewide Travel Demand Model Using Dynamic Traffic Assignment
* SPR-793: Exploring the Development of a Research Data Management Plan
* SPR-794: Enhancing Arizona Roadways' Resilience to Wildfire Through Vegetation Recovery
* SPR-795: Best Practices for Structuring and Managing Statewide Resource-Tracking Databases
It is anticipated that requests for these proposals will be released through this AzTI listserve in early May, with selection and contracting occurring in June/July, and projects will kick off in August 2024. Additional details on specific proposal requirements and timelines will be provided in the near future. If you want to get involved in future AzTI activities, including research problem statement development and other research activities, we would like to request that you complete a one-minute survey using the following link:

Furthermore, we are currently planning an AzTI Arizona Transportation Research Summit to be tentatively held on August 12th (Monday) on the UA main campus in Tucson to formally introduce the institute, network with colleagues, and discuss transportation research processes and needs in Arizona. Please mark your calendar. It would be appreciated if you could forward this email to your colleagues and researchers at UA, ASU, or NAU who would be interested in AzTI activities.
Again, we will have more info in May. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
Yao-Jan Wu, Ph.D., P.E.
