Hi CALES faculty,

We are sending along a quick summary of a few important items reviewed at Faculty Senate, Monday, Sept. 11th, 2023.

  * Senator Zeiders gave a 2-min speech about the Activity Informed Budget (AIB) model and the way it’s impacting CALES (speech attached). It’s also worth noting that CALES Senators and the CALES/CES Faculty Council Chair were invited to the emergency budget retreat on Tuesday, Sept 12th where information on the budget crisis was explained in detail. We are working alongside CALES Faculty Council Chairs to bring you more information about this. We strongly suggest that all faculty attend the CALES town hall on Oct. 17th from 10-11:30 a.m. Registration link forthcoming.

  * At the Faculty Senate meeting, senators were given a handout created by the General Faculty Financial Recalibration Committee (GFFRC), led by Dr. Gary Rhoades. We’ve attached the flier for you to see; it provides initial information about the hiring trends at UA (e.g., that only 10% of faculty hires in 2022 were tenure track) along with trends of hiring of university senior administrators (e.g., 119% increase in the hiring of vice presidents). GFFRC followed up with Senators this morning and discussed that they will be providing a brief presentation of these findings during the Oct. 2nd Senate meeting.

  * And finally, Dr. David Gibbs, the Chair of the Ad Hoc General Faculty Committee on Donor Influence presented a report outlining donor influences at institutions. He discussed the report's findings that included external donors influencing operations, that included hirings, at the Freedom Center. The report is attached to this email.

The next upcoming Faculty Senate meetings are Tuesday, September 26th at 4pm (a special session to hold a vote for a PHD program in Engineering) and Monday, Oct. 2nd from 3-5pm. Oct 2nd agenda will be posted here<https://facultygovernance.arizona.edu/events/faculty-senate-meeting-1> and attendee link is: https://arizona.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_EqhP1j_OTWmmlOj2B9QogQ
