[Faculty] NASA ARID Kick-Off Seminar Event (Monday, Oct 23rd)

On behalf of the NASA Adaptation and Response in Drylands (ARID) Team, I would like to invite you to join us virtually or in person for our “kick-off” seminar taking place from 2:30-5:00pm in the Kachina Lounge, Student Union, University of Arizona, Monday, October 23rd . Feel free to forward this invitation to any colleagues you think would be interested.



ARID is a scoping study selected by NASA’s Terrestrial Ecology (TE) Program to work with dryland scientists and stakeholders as well as the remote sensing community to outline a future NASA field campaign focused on drylands. Drylands are water-limited regions that cover nearly half the globe, include a third of global population, generate 60% of global food production, and contribute greatly to the global carbon cycle. If NASA selects this study, they will commit approximately $100M to a 5-7 year field campaign aimed at improving our understanding of drylands via linking field measurements with NASA satellite observations. Previously funded campaigns include ABoVE, LBA, and BOREAS. Our scoping study will take place through late October 2024 ending with a final report submitted to the NASA TE Program.



The seminar will include an introduction from ARID leadership including Dr. Sasha Reed (USGS) and Dr. Ben Poulter (NASA) as well as dryland science talks from Dr. Steve Running (U. of Montana) and Dr. Jim Tucker (NASA).



We need your input. This session will include some opportunity for discussion and input. We will be including a Google Jamboard for your thoughts during the seminar. We are also planning virtual listening sessions, townhalls at conferences, and meetings with dryland stakeholders.
