[Faculty] Senators Report

Dear CALS Faculty,


In this email, we are combining our summary of the last Faculty Senate meeting (January 23) and the agenda items for the upcoming meeting on February 6th.



Faculty Senate met on January 23rd, and here are a few things we think are important to report on:



  1.  C11 issued their report on the Nominating Committee practices and reform. The report is attached to this email. Additionally, a Nominating Committee resolution was passed allowing faculty (not administrators or only the Nominating Committee chair) to select faculty who will appear on the final CAFT ballot. As you all may know, elections are underway now, and we encourage you to vote.

We did want to alert you to a few items that we think are of interest to faculty:

  1.  There will be a discussion related to the General Faculty Safety/Security report <https://facultygovernance.arizona.edu/sites/default/files/2023-02/FINAL_REDACTED_01-30-2023%20-%20SAFETY%20REPORT.pdf>  which was released yesterday and details the failures within our institution to keep our colleague Dr. Tom Meixner safe. It also details other cases of harassment, intimidation and safety issues happening at UA.  We encourage all faculty to read this report.
  2.  Additionally, on the agenda is a discussion of furlough reimbursement in light of the news report<https://facultygovernance.arizona.edu/sites/default/files/2023-01/Why%20ASU%2C%20UA%20poured%20%24125.5M%20into%20athletics%20at%20height%20of%20pandemic%20%282%29.pdf> detailing athletic bailouts during the pandemic.
  3.  And finally, you’ll notice that the UITS Centralization plan is being discussed, in part because of a memo of concern that was sent by the CALS Faculty Council.
