Everyone,

This short message is the latest in our series of communications regarding how to grapple with generative AI in your classrooms. Many thanks to Jeannie Mclain for noticing the attached article in Monday's edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education. It addresses the very issues that many of you are likely mulling right now: how to set expectations and guidelines for students with respect to Chat GPT; how/what to incorporate into your syllabi; modification of your course assessments, writing assignments, etc.

The UA has yet to provide much guidance on any of the above. If these issues leave you unsettled about the start of classes in 3 weeks, I suggest that you have a look at some/all of the links in the attached article. At the very least it will get you up to speed regarding what's available, how to use it, and how it could affect your course(s), both positively and negatively.

On a separate but related topic, we expect to have a survey of generative AI knowledge/awareness ready for CALES faculty and staff within the next week. Please keep an eye on your email and respond, ideally before the start of classes. Your answers will help to shape CALES programs going foward.

Best regards,

Mike
