Dear CALS Faculty,
We are your Faculty Senators for the 2022-2023 academic year, and we look forward to working with each of you to improve faculty shared governance across our university. This year, please expect the following regarding our roles as Senators:
* Before each Faculty Senate meeting, we will send a link to the agenda and solicit any feedback/comments from members.
* After each Faculty Senate meeting, we will send notes and supporting documents on discussions we deem of interest to CALS and CE faculty.
* Periodically, we will also send a Qualtrics survey to faculty to solicit information or issues you would like us to bring to the Faculty Senate. This feedback can be anonymous. Here is a link to the survey: https://uarizona.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4ZXIgJJOLxYVaD4
Below is an update of 3 items discussed on the 12th Sept 2022 Faculty Senate meeting that we think you may find of interest. Please reach out with questions or clarification.
1. During the meeting, there was a report from the Research Policy Committee (RPC) chaired by Dr. David Cuillier and Dr. Paul Gordon. The committee is discussing how indirect costs (IDC - also called Facilities & Administration or F & A) from grants is distributed to faculty across the University. Under the new RPC plan, PIs will receive 2% of their F & A taken from the grants. The attached document provides more information about this. If this is of interest to you, there are two ways to get involved: 1) provide feedback to the RPC group using this Qualtrics survey: https://uarizona.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_7Pt3XUfSYxeYch8. And 2) attend their next meeting on Monday, Sept. 26th at 2 pm via zoom: https://arizona.zoom.us/j/82777099537.
2. Dr. Gary Rhoades discussed the university furlough (from the 2020-2021 academic year) and the possibility of repaying these monies to faculty and staff. A committee will be convened to look into a payback plan. Dr. Rhoades’ remarks are attached.
3. Finally, there was a discussion about Research, Innovation & Impact (RII) Centers’ representation in the Faculty Senate. This discussion, and a possible vote, will occur during the Oct. 3rd meeting.
The next Faculty Senate meeting is Monday, Oct. 3rd, 3-5 pm. You can attend via zoom (registration link: https://arizona.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_nGCc-GUhQLSdEc8JEv1yow ) or in person (LAW Room 164).
Thank you for your continued engagement in faculty shared governance,
Ravi Goyal, Tim Ottusch, Katie Zeiders
