Dear Colleagues:

One way to become a better grant writer is by reviewing other grant proposals submitted to the agency that you are requesting the funds from. In my case, reviewing for NIH as an Early Career Reviewer transformed the way that I write grant proposals (leading to my R01 award).

Yes, reviewing is a lot of work, but if you are serving on the right panel, you will reap several benefits:

  * live the reader's experience and learn firsthand what works and what doesn't (some proposals will be very effective examples, others may not)
  * gain an understanding of the discussion process and get a sense of how review panels react to different experimental approaches, technologies (emerging and established), and field-specific models and paradigms.
  * meet the panelists and expand your network!

Interested? Please review the following resources to get started!

  * NIH Early Career Reviewer Program https://public.csr.nih.gov/ForReviewers/BecomeAReviewer/ECR

  * USDA NIFA Panelist Recruitment https://nifa.usda.gov/panelist-information
  *
  * Contact your Scientific Society and ask them to suggest you via the NIH Scientific Society Reviewer Recommendation Portal https://public.csr.nih.gov/ForReviewers/BecomeAReviewer/RecommendingPotentialReviewers
  *
  * To become an NSF reviewer, send an e-mail to the NSF program officer(s) of the program(s) that fits your expertise.
     * identify the appropriate Program Officer https://www.nsf.gov/staff/orglist.jsp
     *   draft the following email:
        * introduce yourself and identify your areas of expertise
        * indicate your interest in becoming a peer reviewer for NSF
        * attach a 2-page CV with current contact information

I hope that these resources assist you in becoming a reviewer. If you are successful, don't hesitate to share your experience with me or ask for any reviewing advice.

Best regards,

Zelieann
