Dear CALS Faculty,

1) You are invited to attend the USDA Arizona Community Prosperity Virtual Summits, with UA Yuma (Aug. 13)<https://arizona.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0lde-grTMpE9TWvUUwl222ClTidGYC6MAj?utm_source=Unknown+List&utm_campaign=ad1350bbfe-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_06_23_11_36&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-ad1350bbfe-> and UA main campus (Sept. 3)<https://research.arizona.edu/events/9143-usda-arizona-community-prosperity-virtual-summit?utm_source=Unknown+List&utm_campaign=ad1350bbfe-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_06_23_11_36&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-ad1350bbfe-&utm_source=Unknown+List&utm_campaign=ad1350bbfe-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_06_23_11_36&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-ad1350bbfe-> serving as hosts. Please click on the imbedded hyperlinks to view agendas and to RSVP. The summits aim to develop and maintain partnerships focused on solving challenges facing rural and underserved communities, while connecting those communities to education, tools, and resources available through the USDA. Please consider joining us.

2) USDA HSI Education Grants Program: RFP, submission dates and additional information were recently announced: updated RFP<https://nifa.usda.gov/sites/default/files/rfa/HSI-RFA-FY-2020-2021-01032020.pdf>.

The program offers 3 types of grants:

  *   Regular: $275K max, 4 years, Due: January 26, 2021
  *   Collaboration: $1M max, 4 years, Due: January 27, 2021
  *   Conference grants: $50K max, Due: January 28, 2021

The purpose of the HSI Education Grants Program is to encourage innovative teaching or education proposals with potential to impact and become models for other institutions that serve underrepresented students, at the regional or national level. Projects supported by this program:

  1. Attract and support undergraduate and graduate students from underrepresented groups in order to prepare them for careers related to the food, agriculture, natural resources and human (FANH) sciences in the United States
  2. Enhance the quality of postsecondary instruction within the above disciplines
  3. Provide opportunities and access to FANH careers in the public and private sector
  4. Align the efforts of HSIs and other non-profit organizations to support academic development and career attainment of underrepresented groups

I know of one CALS team who are working towards submitting a collaboration proposal. Multiple submissions are permitted. Please let me know of others who might have an interest in pursuing one of these opportunities and if their interests and backgrounds align well with leading HSI efforts.

Thank you,

Marla A. Franco, Ph.D.
