Dear Fellow CALS Faculty,
The Senate summaries are now available on the Senate website. The January
summary
(http://facultygovernance.arizona.edu/sites/facgov/files/summary_fs_january_
2016_.pdf) and the February summary
(http://facultygovernance.arizona.edu/sites/facgov/files/summary_fs_february
_2016_.pdf) are complete. I'm not sure what happened to the December
summary - I'll check it out.
In December (2015), we did discuss proposed changes in the General Education
Writing Policy and we began to discuss the idea of how to get input from the
students on issues of diversity and inclusiveness here on campus.
In January, the Senate approved new Graduate and Undergraduate syllabus
policies and discussed at much length the notion of inclusiveness and
inclusion within our University. This went beyond, in my opinion, to
addressing diversity but went to action, positive inclusion, making sure all
voices are heard and encouraged to speak up. Lynn Nadel reported on the
listen tours he is heading, listening to our students and trying to develop
a better understanding of the feelings that students have on campus.
This past month, February, we had a presentation from the Commission on the
Status of Women, in particular, to pay more attention to how we write
letters of reference and to be sure not to introduce gender biases in our
letter writing. We also discussed Open Access, a method by which faculty
and staff writings would be available for all. Both the pros and cons were
discussed. A proposal is being put together for the Senate to consider.
Finally, the Senate discuss how to define excellence in teaching and
scholarship. It was very insightful to hear the various definitions across
the campus as represented by the Senators.
Sorry about the delays in getting these out. I'll try to be a bit more
timely in the future. I would be happy to discuss any issues with you or
bring up a concern at the next Senate meeting on March 7.
Regards,
Ed Martin
Faculty Senator
