Limited Solicitation Notice

The USDA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program (AFRI) has issued the Food, Agriculture, Natural Resources and Human Sciences Education and Literacy Initiative (AFRI-ELI, formerly the AFRI NIFA Fellowships Grant Program). AFRI-ELI is offering Undergraduate Research and Extension Experiential Learning Fellowships<http://arizona.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b6ba9388f9c749678c5f1628d&id=88e133e7e7&e=e1f9f074a0> to promote research and extension experiential learning for undergraduates in the agricultural sciences. Funding will support Integrated Projects that encompass NIFA’s AFRI Challenge and AFRI Foundational Areas (below), through well-developed and highly engaged mentoring and training activities.

Program Area Priority
a. Projects aligned with one of the six AFRI Challenge Areas:

  *   Agricultural and Natural Resources Science for Climate Variability and Change
  *   Childhood Obesity Prevention
  *   Food Safety
  *   Food Security
  *   Sustainable Bioenergy
  *   Water Resources
b. Projects aligned with one of the six AFRI Foundational areas.

  *   Plant health and production and plant products
  *   Animal health and production and animal products
  *   Food safety, nutrition, and health
  *   Bioenergy, natural resources, and environment
  *   Agriculture systems and technology
  *   Agriculture economics and rural communities.
This program awards $300,000 total for a period of three years. Institutional allowance, in lieu of indirect costs, not to exceed $1,000 per student per year, may be requested within the $300,000 maximum award limit. The UA may submit up to a total of 3 applications.

Important dates:

  *   College/Institute review internal deadline:  On or about February 27, 2015.  Please consult with your Dean’s/Director’s office for specific date.
  *   Office for Research & Discovery internal review deadline:  March 4, 2015.
  *   Sponsor Deadlines:  Full Application -- May 6, 2015
Interested applicants are asked to submit a 2-3 page pre-proposal to their deans for referral to the Office for Research & Discovery by the internal deadline. Pre-proposals should include a description of:

  1.  The Integrated Project (defined as a project that includes at least two of the three functions of the agricultural knowledge system, i.e., research, education, and extension, focused around a problem or issue);
  2.  How the proposal will address the above Program Area Priority and Other Program Area Requirements (see AFRI-ELI link above).
