Thirty-five Projects Funded to Advance Ag Innovations

The Western Sustainable Agriculture Sustainable Agriculture program (SARE) announces funding for 35 projects totaling over $2.9 million in the 2015 grant cycle. Projects are located in 11 Western states and protectorates.

Innovative researchers, ag professionals, farmers, and ranchers will be investigating topics important to Western agriculture such as high tunnels, cover crops, pollinators, rangeland grazing, soil health, and more. All projects include substantial educational outreach to producers and ag professionals.

Regional Coordinator Teryl Roper says, "In 2015, Western SARE funded projects supporting innovation in sustainability across the breadth of western agriculture. We have projects representing agronomy, horticulture, soil science, pest management, animal science, forestry, and fisheries throughout the western region. This underscores our commitment to improving western agriculture to sustain life in the region."

Full descriptions of each grant can be found at westernsare.org/Projects/Funded-Projects-by-Year/2015-Projects<http://www.westernsare.org/Projects/Funded-Projects-by-Year/2015-Projects>.
 The five grant programs providing funding annually are:

            *         Research & Education

*         Farmer/Rancher

*         Professional + Producer

*         Graduate Student

*         Professional Development Program

Describing one of the programs, Jim Freeburn, PDP Coordinator, states that "PDP grants are a critical component of keeping the extension agents and nonprofits in the western region current on issues and opportunities in sustainable agriculture. These grants PDP grants often create strong collaborations on educational and training programs for all ag professionals."

 Western SARE, a USDA program, annually awards grants to help sustain agriculture, the environment and rural communities. Producers are actively involved in every funded project.

SARE is a program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that functions through competitive grants conducted cooperatively by farmers, ranchers, researchers and agricultural professionals to advance farm and ranch systems that are profitable, environmentally sound and good for communities.
