1 UA'S NEW FINANCIAL SYSTEM WILL AFFECT YOU

A new central financial system will go live at the UA during the first week of October 2011. This will affect the entire university community. From mid-September to mid-October (the peak transition period), many of the business processes that we take for granted will be unavailable. These include expense reimbursements, payments, expense transfers, and some of our procurement options. You should be working with your unit's business staff NOW to plan ahead for these disruptions in service. Heed their warnings about deadlines and restrictions. Challenges will continue after go-live, too. The new system (UAccess Financials) is complex and carries a steep learning curve. There will be a backlog of transactions from the transition downtime to process. There will be a new approval routing system for all transactions and other unanticipated complications to deal with. While there will be many challenges, we will have a new up-to-date financial system!
Thanks for your understanding and your assistance.

2 SECURITY TIP OF THE WEEK

This is the first edition in a series of weekly security tips that will be posted to the CALS Weekly Bulletin. We hear about securing our computers and we're told to secure them but where do we start? These weekly tips will help you keep the bad guys from using your computer and/or stealing your critical data and information.

Tip of the week number 1: Update your OS and other software

Whether you are a Mac, Windows, or Linux user, installing operating system updates and patches is critical. A majority of the time exploits are publicized before hackers know about them. Software patches are then released within a few days of notification.

Windows users, Microsoft usually releases security patches the second Tuesday of every month and this is known as
Patch Tuesday
. Make sure you check for updates on your work and home computers at least once per week. Better yet, configure your computer to receive automatic updates every Tuesday evening.

Linux users can use the
apt-get
command line tool for software updates.

Mac users go to the
Apple
 menu and then select
Software Update
. You will need to enter an Administrator account name and password.
