Subject: Messaging Strategy for Communicating Leadership Transition to External Stakeholders

As we process today’s announcement and prepare to welcome Mike Staten into his interim role, I wanted to outline some ways we can coordinate our messaging throughout this transition to make sure we emphasize our continued commitment to our mission, reassure our communities, and demonstrate continuity in leadership and vision.

To that end, I suggest we focus on the following key elements in our messaging:

  1.  Highlighting Dean Burgess’ significant contributions and leadership: Provost Marx’s message this morning lays a foundation for this, but I know we all likely have ways his leadership has positively impacted us, our students, research, etc. Let’s celebrate all we have accomplished together in these last 10 years.


  1.  Reaffirming Stability and Mission Alignment: It’s critical that we underscore our ongoing commitment to the institution’s mission, values, and long-term objectives. This will help reassure external partners and donors that, while leadership is evolving, our core direction remains steadfast.



  1.  Engagement with Stakeholders: Each of you touch and work with important audiences, can we explore opportunities for Mike Staten to connect directly with key stakeholders in a meaningful way, whether through events, meetings, or other forums, to build trust and momentum from the outset. Bethany and her team can help support you and get these opportunities on Mike’s calendar once he transitions.
If you receive concerns from our stakeholder groups, please let me know and we’ll work collectively to elevate them to the appropriate touchpoints on campus.

If you receive media requests, please forward them to me directly. No need to reply, I will be working with our central communications office to respond to inquiries directly.

Please let me know your thoughts, and we can move forward with a draft communication plan that ensures a smooth, strategic rollout of this important leadership transition.
