Related to Jeff's earlier email...

As you become aware of any changes to faculty positions (retirement, resignation, non-renewal, or...) PLEASE make sure that I am kept fully aware.

This is not micromanaging on my part - it is because such changes often involve my input. For example, I must relay the availability of exit interviews for faculty who are leaving, and/or I need to be aware of the possibility of an appeal of an administrative decision. I thank you very much in advance for this.

Subject: [unitheads-cales] Important Reminders about Resignation and Retirement

ALVSCE Unit Leaders,

Several leaders have had questions about resignations and retirements. Just a few reminders.

  1. Acknowledge and accept resignation or retirement requests in writing. Accepting a resignation or retirement gives you greater administrative grounds to negotiate or reject changes to the effective date, or later attempts by the employee to rescind their request. Please forward or include Sonia Jones in your response to the employee for record keeping.

  1. NEVER initiate retirement discussions with staff or faculty. Retirement discussions must only occur in response to a staff or faculty member who initiate it with you first. Do not act on second-hand information. Initiated interest must be first-hand from the staff or faculty member themselves Unprompted retirement discussions can be grounds for age discrimination.

  1. Tenured or Continuing faculty who are vested in the Optional Retirement Plan and who have initiated retirement discussions with you might be interested in phasing their retirement. Phased retirements are a voluntary, irrevocable, and legally binding agreement to phase faculty into full retirement over 2 or 3 years. More info here<https://roadahead.arizona.edu/abor-phased-retirement-program-orp-participants>. Please work with Jean McLain during the negotiations.

  1. Get professional counsel before negotiating work arrangements after retirement. Faculty and staff enrolled in the Arizona State Retirement System have restrictions on when they can return to work for the UA after officially retiring. Work with Jean McLain, Sonia Jones, or Sam Gaxiola before offering.

  1. Faculty with 15 years or more experience may be eligible to apply for emeritus status, which will allow them to continue in research participation and advising of students. More information is here<https://facultyaffairs.arizona.edu/retiring-faculty-resources>. Please note that the Vice Provost requires a minimum of 90 days' notice of emeritus application. Any questions can be directed to Jean McLain.

  1. Work with our professionals: Jean McLain for faculty issues, or Sonia Jones or Sam Gaxiola for staff issues.
