[CED/CD/EAT] Faculty hiring with diversity statements

Academic Unit Heads and CEDs,

In my work with the ALVSCE Diversity & Inclusion Council, I have learned that at least one faculty search committee knowingly reviewed applicants who did not submit a diversity statement, which the position announcement required.  Human Resources has confirmed that applicants must include all required materials to be considered.  The position announcement dictates what is required.  If an application packet is not complete, that candidate cannot be reviewed for the position.  Please ensure faculty search chairs follow this institutional requirement.

I applaud the units that already require diversity statements in the hiring process.  Statements help to ensure the new hire is aligned with UArizona values and the ALVSCE foundational goal of being the most sought after place to be a part of, and they explicate the applicant's lived experience.  The D&I Council has begun work to update the division hiring process for faculty, and diversity statements will be a required part of future application packets.
