Message from the State AZ4-H Program Leader
Dear Arizona 4-H Caring Adults,
In this newsletter you will learn about the many opportunities that will be available this upcoming summer. I think this summer will absolutely be an Arizona 4-H Summer of Fun. We are off to a good start with the transition back to in-person county fairs. We are starting to see National 4-H Events being held in person and we will be able to send our team to National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships in June. Additionally, this summer we have a comprehensive line-up of in person programming, including: we are ready to welcome youth and groups to James 4-H Camp and Outdoor Learning Center (https://t.e2ma.net/click/4oh25c/s3cj3mp/khufwj), we are going to be hosting Arizona 4-H Summit on campus, and we are thrilled that we will again be able to convene J.O.L.T. for a true journey of opportunities for leaders of tomorrow.
Also, I am incredibly excited to share with you two significant investments in bringing #opportunity4all for you, our essential volunteers and to our youth members. Read on and learn more!
Sincerely,Jeremy Elliott-Engel

Authorized 4-H Adults' Background Check Fees to be Paid by AZ4-HYF for the Next Six Years
As you each know, 4-H is a community-based program that relies heavily on caring adult volunteers. University Arizona Cooperative Extension, in partnership with the Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation (https://t.e2ma.net/click/4oh25c/s3cj3mp/09ufwj) will cover the costs of volunteer background checks for the next six years starting July 1, 2021. While volunteer background checks are required for all the University Arizona Cooperative Extension authorized 4-H adults, many authorized 4-H adults have generously covered their own costs for the background check in the past. Arizona 4-H Youth Foundation Director, Deb Lester, says, “We cannot reach our goal of 20,000 True Leaders by 2025 without first supporting our volunteers, and this was identified as the greatest burden and barrier by you, our caring adults. We are proud we can help say thank you for all of your hard work.”
4-H Youth Program Fees Waived for 4-H Year 2021-2022 (Starting with re-enrollment)
University of Arizona Cooperative Extension proudly waives state and county program fees for the land-grant university’s positive youth development program, Arizona 4-H, in the Year 2021-22.
We believe this is an important time for University of Arizona Cooperative Extension to step up and do what we can. Ensuring 4-H is free means we are able to create an opportunity for all. Director, Arizona Cooperative Extension, Dr. Jeff Silvertooth says, “We acknowledge not every program or activity could be delivered in alternate formats, or in traditional methods but we had to make those changes so that we did not compromise the health and safety of participants from the life-threatening virus.”
This investment is a welcome back to youth and families who took a year off, a thank you to those families who continue to thrive in 4-H, and a welcome to new families who are looking for an opportunity to continue activities they started during the last year.

Youth Leading Learning in AZ 4-H
Throughout the pandemic, leaders and volunteers have been working hard to continue programs in Arizona 4-H. There have also been youth working hard to understand and teach curriculum to their peers. Tyrell Dewangyuptewa and Emilio Martinez are both outstanding 4-H robotics teachers in their community.
Tyrell Dewangyuptewa, a 7th grader from the Hopi Tribe started 4-H last year when he attended his first robotics camp in the summer of 2020. In the program he learned how to complete missions with his robot by coding. After his first conference Tyrell was asked to return and teach the future attendees of these training programs. At first it was intimidating, “I was really nervous before I started teaching but it has gotten better,” says Tyrell.
Emilio Martinez, a 7th grader from Maricopa County joined 4-H when he was eight years old and has since started a community club with his friends. He has taken robotics and augmented reality classes which he now teaches. Emilio says, “One thing I enjoy from teaching is when my students get to go to the awards night, and I get to see them happy from finishing the program.” He is currently working on a robot that can be controlled by a remote and can go underwater to collect objects.
Tyrell and Emilio are also 4-H STEM Ambassadors, which allows them to share their STEM skills with their community through engaging activities. They have taught their lessons over zoom since the start of the pandemic but that hasn’t stopped them from creating an engaging atmosphere for their peers.

Thank you all for Building-Up Arizona 4-H. Through your donations, scholarships will be provided to 30 kinds for 4-H camp, 100 kids for AZ 4-H Summit, and 1 youth to National 4-H Conference next spring.
County Fair Showcase
Many counties had their county fairs over these past couple of months. Thank you to all of the volenteers, leaders, and members who have put in countless hours working with youth and completing their projects. This year was definately not traditional but with creative strategies 4-H members were still able to showcase their projects! We are featuring picutres from the Pinal and Yuma County Fair.

Aerospace through electricity, leadership, livestock large and small all the way to yeast breads are just a few of the projects listed on the Arizona 4-H projects page and are available to youth in Arizona. Many projects names have links to resources. Arizona 4-H projects allow a young person to take their interests and turn them into mastery. Arizona 4-H focuses on four pillars: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM); Agriculture; Civic Engagement, and Healthy Living. 4-H members can work on many different projects.
