Exploring a Dynamic Soil Information System

Soils are a critical natural resource that support a wide range of human activities, but current systems for monitoring soils do not provide an accurate picture of changes in the soil resource over time. The National Academies invite you to a workshop to help envision a Dynamic Soil Information System that would overlay important chemical, physical, and biological information about soil samples taken from a wide range of geographies.

The envisioned system would dynamically gather and integrate information on land use and land management, moisture, weather, and other variables that affect soil. It would have utility for policy makers and land managers as well as a wide range of disciplines, including hydrology, climate science, agriculture, and geology. Discussions at the workshop will cover the level of detail needed by potential users and how information can be most effectively collected, combined, and curated over time.

This workshop is public and free to attend. It will be recorded and posted on the event webpage a week or two after the event.
