Message from the State AZ 4-H Program Leader

Greetings Arizona 4-H Volunteers,

I hope you are keeping yourself and if you have an animal project, your project cool too. July is a month in 4-H that I hope youth are busy with summer fun: County 4-H Camp, J.O.L.T. or day-long learning experiences. It is also a month where 4-H volunteers may be either gearing up for Fall Fairs or winding down on the year if you are in a county with a Spring Fair. In either case I hope you are able to find some time to relax and reflect on your successes in 4-H and in your personal life.

Last month we were able to send a statewide delegation of youth to the National Shooting Sports Championship in Grande Isle, NE. I am excited to share that Gauge McGraw from Coconino County placed 10th out of youth from 32 states and over 70 contestants in the Pistol Division. Please join me in celebrating his demonstration of Mastery at this competitive level. Also, I want to thank the volunteers who are supporting Guage, and many others like him to focus on the learning objective. You can learn more about that from Mike Hauser in the feature article in this newsletter.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Elliott-Engel

State 4-H Associate Director

Keeping the Learning Objective In Mind

Good learning objectives help youth hit the target of their goals.  Clarity, intentionality, focus, and expectations are the elements of good learning objectives.  Find out more about learning objectives here https://extension.arizona.edu/july-learning-objectives (https://t.e2ma.net/click/4cglad/s3cj3mp/4ck4zj).

AZ 4-H Summit 2021

>From June 5-9th, 4-H members from across the state came together on the University of Arizona campus for five days of activities designed to enhance critical thinking, develop skills, and begin their career preparation. They spent time listening to career professionals give advice on how to achieve the career they want and attended the Clover Ball where they were able to see first-hand the achievements of other 4-H members.

Robert Day, who attended the AZ 4-H Summit, said, "Summit had many learning opportunities with all the presentations and speeches you are almost guaranteed to learn something. Another thing that really stuck out to me is what 4-H is. From my little town all I thought 4-H to be is the animals and projects; however it is a lot more than that. It is the friends and memories you make, it is the connections you make down the road in life, finally it is about you and what you put in it."

Be A Flock Defender!

USDA’s Defend the Flock education program offers free tools and resources to help everyone who works with or handles poultry follow proper biosecurity practices. These practices will help keep your birds healthy and reduce the risk of avian influenza and other infectious diseases. Biosecurity is everyone’s job.  Visit www.aphis.usda.gov/animalhealth/defendtheflock (https://t.e2ma.net/click/4cglad/s3cj3mp/win4zj) for more information including Youth Program (https://t.e2ma.net/click/4cglad/s3cj3mp/cbo4zj) materials.

CWF Update: From Youth

The virtual Citizenship Washington Focus has been happening these past couple of weeks. Members have been attending sessions and workshops learning more about empathy, active listening, and national topics.

Ellie Pascavis is currently attending CWF and said, "Citizen Washington Focus allowed me to meet people from all across the United States as well as political officials. This event has helped me learn more about media outlets and ways to help find out which issues are real and which are fake. I have been able to hear political problems that are happening in other states and what they are doing to help solve the issue."
