Message from the State AZ 4-H Program Leader
Greetings Arizona 4-H Volunteers,
For me, August will inextricably be connected to the County Fair. As a 4-H member, August was County Fair and State Fair. While my experience was in a different state with a different calendar,I am sure anyone who has previously had an experience can recognize that preparation for Fair was the moment I had waited for all summer. Fair, where the hard work of chores, practice, and planning would pay off in: Fun! As a young person, I wasn’t thinking about Mastery as I packed up the pick-up to go to the Fair, I was thinking about the opportunity to be with friends, share my passion for agriculture and my animals with my peers. Today, I see the County Fair as an opportunity for 4-H youth to showcase their mastery, the place where their project work is assessed and provided feedback, and where the lessons of personal dedication and hard work that we value in positive youth development can be fostered. Those aspects are essential for a young person’s personal growth; and the other aspect that is essential is Fun! For over half of our counties you are spending August gearing up for the county fair, for the other half of our counties you are gearing up for a new year with Fair a far off glimpse.
Also, reminder that 4-H re-enrollment is starting and, remember, program fees are waived this year so what a great opportunity to recruit new members and invest in new projects!

Youth Development Webpage has great resources!
Next month we'll have an article on brainstorming with youth. JOLT 2021 Recap
Journey: Opportunities for Leaders of Tomorrow (JOLT) is an annual summer camp experience for Arizona 4-H Teens. Young leaders from around the state of Arizona gather at the James 4-H Camp to develop life skills, make new friends, and make new memories. This years JOLT took place July 12th - 16th and welcomed members from all across the state.
Members spent the week completing leardership/teamwork activites, going on wilderness hikes, and ending the days around the campfire. Mims, a 4-H member said their favorite activity was leadership building through the peanut butter river activity.
At the end of the week members were given the oppurtunity to perform in a talent show! Miriam won first place with her delightful prose and dance; Marcelo and Day came in second with lessons on how to show a pig; and Ellie, Sadie, and Libby were third with “Part of Your World.”
Take the Arizona Swine Survey!
As a small operation raising swine in Arizona, you can provide information that’s critical to keeping Arizona swine safe from diseases and other threats, to securing funding, and to informing policy making. If you are one of the enterprises that received the USDA NAHMS Swine Small Enterprise Survey in the mail, please complete it and mail it back. The Arizona swine industry depends on you.
Please contact the study lead (Charles Haley, 970-225-1377 or charles.a.haley at usda.gov (mailto:charles.a.haley at usda.gov)) with any questions. To read more about USDA’s National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) Swine Studies, visit their website!
