FYI… please note that the inclusion of “field operations at AES sites” is now considered the same as for laboratories in the requirements for this reporting effort.

Dear HODs,

Please proceed to aggregate information from your faculty regarding the critical maintenance activities that must continue should we enter a more restrictive phase for research in response to a Shelter in Place directive. As highlighted below, this should include only the most critical activities required to preserve valuable resources or reagents, or specialized equipment. I ask that our Agriculture Experiment Station facilities include field operations on this list. Please submit spreadsheets to me by close of business tomorrow.

Let me now if you have questions.

Parker

Dear HODs,

Although I presently have no specific information regarding the possibility of a shelter in place directive for all or parts of Arizona, such a directive would likely result in the complete shutdown of research on campus and at our remote sites.

So that we can optimally prepare for this possibility, I would like to query ALVSCE faculty/laboratory supervisors for activities that they would consider critically essential to continue should a complete research shutdown be ordered. Although a small number of critical research research activities would likely continue, for example projects related to COVID-19, virtually all laboratories would need to follow the temporary closure procedures detailed in the University Temporary Closure Procedures Document that you distributed yesterday to faculty. Some critical maintenance activities would also likely be allowed to continue; the goal of this inquiry is to identify those and be ready to request exemptions should they be needed.

I ask that you query faculty by email and collate the responses on the attached spreadsheet, though you can certainly distribute the spreadsheet if you prefer. To be clear, faculty should NOT be requesting to continue research projects. Sample activities could include periodic maintenance of irreplaceable stocks of insects, animals, plants etc., periodic maintenance of valuable equipment. Periodic general checking of labs and/or standard lab equipment and freezers, refrigerators etc, is not considered critical. Securing these are part of the Temporary Closure Procedures.

Here is the information I’m requesting:

Faculty Name
Description of Critical Activity
Frequency of Activity
Building and Room Location
Justification

I would like to receive information by close of business tomorrow, so this will be a very quick turnaround.

Please let me know if your thoughts/comments/suggestions ASAP. I have obviously developed this quickly so there may be gaps or things I’m missing. Your help most appreciated. I would like to send a final email to you by late this afternoon.

Thanks

Parker
