Extension Administration Team, County Extension Directors, and Academic Unit Heads,
This issue points out an important fact relevant to anyone at a Land Grant Institution and most certainly anyone working in Cooperative Extension.
Based fundamentally on the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890, and very explicitly in the Smith-Lever Act of 1914 that formed the Cooperative Extension Service, we are always committed in our work for the benefit of all people, everyone, irrespective of their ethnicity, gender, religion, nation of origin, sexual orientation, economic status, etc.
While we recognize, respect, and appreciate the spirit and intent of the #ShutDownAcademia/#ShutDownSTEM movement, we do not need to stop our work in Cooperative Extension that exists to help all the people in our communities, particularly those who have suffered the most from prejudice and discrimination.
Essentially, in the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension System (CES), we are here to serve all people from all sectors of our communities all the time. This is a good opportunity for us to be reminded of that fact and commit ourselves to adhere to those principles and standards every day. This movement provides a good opportunity for us to reflect on these issues and consider how we can each do a better job in addressing our mission in the CES for all people.
Best regards,
Jeff

FYI.....
We posted this in the TMN yesterday, 9 June 2020. At that time there was no announcement from the VPRII, the ALVSCE VP, or any other official UA representative.
This is a movement and consistent with VP Burgess' comments, I fully support the spirit and intent.
Best regards,
Jeff Silvertooth

Everyone, like me you have probably received at least one email message in the last 12 hours asking you to:
Take a stand against racism #ShutDownAcademia #ShutDownSTEM through direct action to address injustices that Black academics and students are faced with through institutional and systemic racism specifically through:
No work
No research
No classes
No business as usual
You likely also received the following link below to educate yourself on how you can eradicate structural and systemic oppression. https://www.shutdownstem.com/for-department-leaders
I have not yet had the time to go to the link, but I will immediately after sending this email.
Those of you in UA's research network should also have received an email from VPRII Cantwell about the New Topic for Today's (June 10) RII Research Chat at noon-1pm, at which In support of #ShutDownSTEM and #ShutDownAcademia, SVPRII Cantwell will focus on racial injustice and inequities in STEM. I strongly encourage you to attend if you can.
As a partner and as an ally with all people who suffer any form of systemic discrimination, prejudice, inequality, unfairness, inequity and/or racism, or these same things perpetrated by individuals, my work today will be limited only to that directly fulfilling the purpose and intents of equality access to higher education for all articulated in both Morrill Acts (1862 and 1890), because not doing so would have a negative effect on equality, equity and access for the very people I stand with in support.
Regards
Shane
