LOCAL UPDATES TO STAY HEALTHY AND SAFE

Tuesday, December 1

Arizona's number of identified COVID-19 cases has reached 337,139 (up 10,322 from the day before)<https://cl.exct.net/?qs=acfcd8d1d68e89e1e338d4b78442b776e3da3a6340875ab4a41387d1c2562fce2ee229d22319cd9844c888af571cef7b28ae0695d8601a08bdb5ac71a5443dca>, and the number of deaths increased by 48 to 6,687.

It's Tuesday evening, and this is Coronavirus Watch from The Arizona Republic<https://cl.exct.net/?qs=acfcd8d1d68e89e18cfd2b83f5ab8200efe3ee041f0cbff8e2fb3a8681a3cdff8c1c74b73295e0337717eac15812663e6089cb74206e4ab43191df6e8e2b4602>, where we update you about the latest on how COVID-19 is affecting you and our community.

The huge spike in the number of reported cases — more than double the previous daily record — is concerning but also reflective of a holiday backlog, the Arizona Department of Health Services said.

State leaders wanted to emphasize that point, so Tuesday's number release came with a blog post from department director Dr. Cara Christ<https://cl.exct.net/?qs=acfcd8d1d68e89e1dee57a9e631f5a82ce289a463ecc52003b84520ea3a8e8814714e0c1aa4a7510d3efde3dbb403fc35f6edc510a31565df8230aca4786b6ac>.

"It is important to note that these newly reported cases were from specimens collected over the last week and are not all from yesterday," Christ wrote. "While today’s higher numbers have a simple explanation due to the long weekend, the numbers are still trending in a concerning direction, especially considering that the number of holiday parties and gatherings are expected to increase over the next few weeks."

Even before the holiday season started, new cases have soared, with more than 1,000 in 26 of the past 30 days. During that time, new cases have surpassed 4,000 per day on seven days, numbers that haven't occurred since the surge over the summer.
