[CED/CD/EAT] Important Clarification

CEDs,

I have an important clarification for you regarding pt. 2 in the body of VP Burgess' notes concerning "Endowment sweep" that I sent to you this afternoon:

It turns out this is not a bad deal at all. Sweeping was a very bad term to use, a misnomer, so you can disregard any thought of that on this.

For some foundation accounts, they are accumulating the payouts. If an account has more than two years accumulated payout, then they will take additional dividends and reinvest the funds in the corpus account.

So if someone is not using the payout funding they are not losing anything. In fact, they will likely gain from the deal since they will now be buying low on the market and gain the profits later on.

So I send to you all as an FYI. It is definitely not worth sending that original message out with words like "sweep" and starting a totally unnecessary panic, we have enough of that already. Just like none of us want to cry out "fire" in a theater.

Thanks,

Jeff

Quotes in italics

President Robbins. Discussion of HBO TV show about basketball y'day at 6pm. Told deans that ABOR would have concerns.

Provost:

1. No increase in UA positive people, 10 positive people in Banner.

2. Endowment sweep ($12.3M): JP Roczniak offered to develop waiver process but says "$26.6M in colleges' endowment accounts". Provost wants this spent before waiving sweep on any of the $12.3M-she will send a list of funds by college. If these are restricted then we should ask donors to ask for a change -JPR told the provost that this is a "great time to ask". He also told her that if a donor has passed away then the UAF Board can change the restrictions (SB: I have no idea what happens if there are living relatives).

3. Faculty startup funds: consistent with faculty P C/T clock-stop provost will extend startup funding that is coming from provost office. No answer from VPRII about this (SB: which is most, possibly all, of ours).

4. TA hires: provost said that she doesn't want to see TA hiring requests to approve. Equally the deans are to ensure that unit heads are not over extending themselves on hiring TAs, especially as fall classes will be smaller (SB: we don't have an issue here and this is signaling that "you won't be bailed out, and the provost will 'hold the line' as she says when deficit budgeting and/or deficit spending)

Kasey Urquidez UA recruitment: trying to be more responsive to the colleges.

Brent White: International Grad Students-State Dept. has stopped all visa processing. Keep matriculating Grad students and they can start with on-line courses and then get their visas and then get here in person.

Regards
Shane

President Robbins. Discussion of HBO TV show about basketball at 6pm

Provost (all in italics are quotes):

  1. You many pay for increased bandwidth at peoples' homes, obviously this is taxable income.
  2. Hiring students to do research: a. yes these will need approval and paperwork like every other hire (you may have more than one student on the same paperwork but b. you must first chose students from a list of UA Auxiliary units that is to be provided. If you chose students from this list, the UA Auxiliary units will pay half the salary cost. If no students on the UA Auxiliary units are qualified to do the jobs then you may hire other students BUT you must prove why these UA Auxiliary units students are not qualified and pay the full costs of student labor.
  3. There is currently NO discussion of staff layoffs-please communicate this to your people.

Shane
