Dear Directors,
The CALS Faculty Council met yesterday. Here is a summary. Please let me know if you have any questions or issues you would like addressed.
The CALS FC was joined by Drs. Mike Staten (Associate Dean) and Betsy Arnold, CATE (Cardon Academy for Teaching Excellence) Fellow. Here are some highlights (more will be shared in the newsletter):
1. The College administration is fully aware of the equity issues in particular with teaching. Equities such as credit hours as well as the classes themselves, the size, the requirement from the faculty teaching the class, grading, etc.
2. What is being considered (by CATE) as a first step is a general across the board guideline that says 1x FTE is EQUAL to 6 (x3 credits) courses.
3. The challenge will be to insure that all faculty are well within those norms/numbers
4. It would be hard to address all the nuances (graduate vs. undergraduate, tough course vs. easy course, Course with lab. vs one without, course with many student vs. one with less).
5. Members of the FC suggested that these nuances are actually at the core of this issue - it is these little nuances that actually lead to many of the inequalities that faculty are concerned about.
6. The status of POPs and their desire for meaningful support, growth opportunity, and equity was also part of these ongoing discussions. Even the name "POP" doesn't necessarily reflect well upon these faculty members.
7. The University budget will face a $17M shortfall resulting from president Robin's plan to recruit and fund "high caliber out of state students". CALS cut is $1.7M compared to other colleges (Science $5.6M, SBS $4M, etc.)
Regards,
Ed
