Dean Burgess wanted me to share the following with his direct reports. The connection between academic leaders and business leaders is growing in importance in the higher ed industry but also at the UA specifically. I have been encouraging business officers to engage in trainings such as this to help them grow professionally to meet the challenge and better understand the needs, communication, and mission-focus of the faculty. Along with this requires an awareness and appreciation for the contributions of business ideals and concepts by the faculty.

There’s room for improvement on both sides, but I’m pleased with the acceptance of these ideas in CALS. I think as a college, we have a culture that is more inclusive of the contributions of all members. In my work at the UA, contributions of staff and APs have not always been so well received.

Kudos, please continue to work closely with your business officer. And please continue to stress the importance that they tackle professional growth (in any format).

Jeffrey
