There really aren't many fruit trees that will perform well in the
transitional areas between residential non-xeric landscapes and the Sonoran
Desert..
There is a list of deciduous fruit and nut trees at
http://cals.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/az1269/
but they are of the more traditional varieties..
One of my favorite Southwestern authors is ethnobotanist Dr. Gary Paul
Nabham who is currently at Northern Arizona University but is also the
author of about a dozen books on the topic of desert edibles. He has held
important positions at the Desert Botanical Garden, Desert Sonoran Museum,
and the Museum of Northern Arizona. You might begin your research at Native
Seeds/SEARCH in Tucson where he was a co-founder. Or try contacting him
directly at NAU for answers to your questions. Try finding his out-of-print
"Gathering the Desert" at a local library.
