Name Change for Diversity & Inclusion Council

[Agriculture, Life and Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension Weekly Bulletin]

Good morning,

I'm pleased to share that the ALVSCE Diversity & Inclusion Council has changed its name to the ALVSCE Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council (DEI).

The Diversity Council first began in 1994 in the College of Agriculture (CALS came later).  Diversity has been an intentional priority for almost 30 years; an achievement that represents our intentional effort at growth and understanding.  As research and society have evolved, we are keeping these initiatives relevant by evolving with them.  There are many terms and permutations that organizations are using to describe their DEI initiatives.  The Council selected the name DEI after many discussions and a review of university and national trends.

Diversity and inclusion are important terms, but why they matter is expressed through the concept of equity.  Centering equity demonstrates that we acknowledge that not all individuals start at the same place, and that we, as an organization, have a long-term commitment to sustainable actions to support everyone in the way that they want to be supported.  Equity is manifest in everyday things like faculty mentors for first generation students, Extension programming that addresses the unique wants of urban and rural populations, childcare or eldercare programs for employees with family responsibilities, or special attention given to recruiting students and faculty from underrepresented communities.

DEI and the mission of Land-Grant education are rooted in a similar understanding: access for everyone, regardless their circumstance or identity.  In order to represent Arizona, we must reflect the diversity of Arizona.  A goal we continue to strive for.
