Dear Colleagues,
Yesterday, President Biden signed a bill that recognizes Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Federal employees will observe Juneteenth for the first time today.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865 -- two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation -- when many Black people still held in bondage in Texas learned of their freedom.
The UA remains open today because adopting a federal holiday across Arizona is the State Legislature's purview.
After signing the bill yesterday, President Biden said, "It's also a day for us to reaffirm and rededicate ourselves to action."
Please join me in stopping what you are doing for a moment to remember those who suffered in, from, and because of slavery in the U.S. and its appalling legacy.
Please join me also in considering what you will do to rededicate yourself to acting consistently with our shared ideals and values so that we can be the most sought-after place to be a part of -- for everyone.
Thank you for all you continue you to do for those you love, your friends and colleagues, and for those you don't know and won't know you, but whose lives your Extension, teaching, and research are transforming.
Regards,
Shane
