Subject: Fall 2021 Course Schedule - process update.

Dear Deans, U-CAAC and G-CAAC members, and Department H/C/Ds,

In response to several questions that have emerged since the Governor’s Executive Order<https://azgovernor.gov/executive-orders> of 15 June 2021, I am writing to clarify the process for proposed course instructional modality changes for Fall 2021, recognizing that we are still experiencing uncertainty arising from the tail of the pandemic.

As previously announced<https://view.comms.arizona.edu/?qs=3e15c5e752f893ad286fa0ea99254dc70b22f104e40599ec4af5ef62b844b83182ced54b346822f1cea3a5c36a4be7bc590de5fd9f30776af49ae8f684b6d9f41ba810f55ed777ce83f0af090c14ad6c> we will return most courses at our Main Campus to fully in-person formats in the Fall 2021 semester, with a small percentage of courses offered as Flex in-Person or Live Online where those are the optimal pedagogical approaches as determined by the relevant H/C/D, and / or academic program director.  The Fall 2021 class formats that are already published in Schedule of Classes support this approach, and I ask you to remember that changes to the schedule at this point in time are destabilizing to those students who have already made their plans for the fall semester.  Further, we cannot support large numbers of students in Live Online or Flex-in-Person classes when they are here on campus, since each student would need a quiet, separate, place to join those classes by zoom, interspersed with moving between their in-person classes.

Accordingly, for Fall 2021, all new Live Online or Flex in-Person sections must be approved by the Associate Dean of the college and myself with appropriate rationale as to why the class section is optimal.   (As usual, we do not allow class format/modality changes for classes that have students enrolled.)

All new incoming Live Online or Flex In-Person section requests received from RCS will be routed to the relevant College Associate Dean for review/approval.  Associate Deans, please communicate your support (or otherwise) to Alex Underwood (copied herein) who will coordinate my approval and any schedule updates.

We will continue to monitor public health conditions daily so that we can best support the health and well-being of our campus and community.  At present, we continue to see week-over-week decreases in serious illnesses arising from COVID-19 in Pima and AZ, and continued slow-but-steady improvement in vaccination rates.  Further, we continue to see remarkably high efficacy of the 3 vaccines that have been deployed in Arizona against the COVID-19 variants.  However, we remain vigilant as new data emerges and our understanding of the virus develops.
Thank you for your support as we navigate planning for the Fall 2021 semester and serve the needs of our students for the fall semester.
