Subject: UA Student Online Classroom Experiences & Learning | Week 3 Survey Summary

Hello,

A survey was administered during Week 3 to better understand what aspects of the online/remote classroom experience support learning, how the University of Arizona can further strengthen those efforts, and identify areas for improvement. The UA Student Online/Remote Classroom Experience and Learning Survey<https://arizona.box.com/s/yi5dqd4byttn9azw4e7mfddp3q1czdxv> elicited a 14% response rate with 5,285 responses.

Selected insights include:

Course Modalities:

· Undergraduates favor more in-person courses for spring 2021, whereas graduate/professional students prefer more online courses

Online Course Components that Support Student Learning:

· A high majority of students agree instructors are accessible and they felt supported by instructors under the current conditions

· Instructors should aim to prioritize the organization of D2L sites and making materials accessible, both reported as key to supporting online classroom learning. These are followed by having clear expectations on what is required to be successful, timely communication on course changes, and course materials that are relevant.

· Most students understand the course expectations and grade policies for fall 2020, yet 20% of undergraduate and 12% of graduate/professional students remain unclear on these expectations.

Online/Remote Learning Challenges

· 1 in 3 students reported they had limited internet access and 2 in 10 students reported barriers due to lack of technology or software access that reduce their ability to perform in class.

· Fewer students report personal distractions compared to spring, which reflects more time to prepare for successful remote learning compared to the quick pivot to online in spring 2020

· Compared to spring, challenges related to uncertainty or unfamiliarity with required academic technologies has slightly increased. Students report this is in part due to additional online learning platforms to improve delivery which now presents new challenges for students to learn how to use.

· Feelings of isolation and loneliness increased from the spring semester and continue to impact student mental and emotional wellbeing and ability to effectively engage in learning online.

Let me know if there is an opportunity to discuss these findings with you or your team and how they can be used to support students. – Lucas
