Hello BSPS students:

I am writing in order to provide clarification and guidance regarding the message you recently received from UArizona Provost Folks. As her message explains, several policy exceptions have been put in place for this semester only which allow students some new options.

The new policy that allows students to select a pass/fail grading option seems to be generating the most questions and confusion. As was explained, you now have two grading options for your Spring 2020 courses:

  1. Your courses may maintain their current letter grade option (A/B/C/D/E), in which case no action is needed.
  2. One or more of your courses may be changed to a Pass/Fail option, in which case a request form must be submitted through the Office of Registration and Transcripts. (This form is not yet available, but will be soon.)

As you consider this new Pass/Fail option please keep the following in mind:

  * Pass/Fail grades do not figure into your GPA. This may be something to consider if you are working to raise your GPA this semester.
  * UA’s PharmD program will accept Pass/Fail grades in prerequisite courses completed this semester.
  * We cannot guarantee that Pass/Fail courses will be accepted for admission to other PharmD programs, professional schools, or graduate schools. However, UA will add a transcript notation to classes taken as Pass/fail in Spring 2020 to note the extraordinary nature of this grading basis. Many other universities are adjusting their grading policies for this term and providing similar transcript notations, so there is a good chance that Pass/Fail grades will be accepted more broadly. We just cannot make any promises about what another school is going to do. You can directly contact your schools of interest for more guidance.
  * If you choose to switch one or more courses to pass/fail, please do not view this as an opportunity to discontinue your efforts in that class. Especially in the case of your major and supporting science courses (PCOL, CHEM, PSIO, MCB, MATH, etc.), you NEED to learn this content for future courses, graduate/professional programs, and your career. Learn as much as you can in each of your courses, rather than just aiming for a minimum passing grade.

Provost Folks’ message also discussed changes to the spring course withdrawal deadline, GRO policy, and academic progression. You can find a very helpful FAQ page that addresses these policies at https://registrar.arizona.edu/coronavirus-covid-19-information , but we also encourage you to contact us with any questions. As always, PLEASE talk with Rebecca or Maia before withdrawing from any course so we can discuss any implications to your degree progress.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We’re here to help!

Best,

Rebecca and Maia
