Subject: [UPAC] Fw: Online classes for the remainder of the semester, and a tip for working at home with kids

Hi fellow Advisors,

I thought I'd share an email I recently sent to my students to a) notify them of the decision for online classes for the remainder of the semester and b) a tip for trying to balance studying at home with entertaining and parenting school-aged children. Feel free to edit and share as you see fit.

Stay safe and healthy,
Martha

Subject: Online classes for the remainder of the semester, and a tip for working at home with kids

Hey AWEsome HAS students, especially those who are also parents of young children:

I was recently contacted by a student who is trying to balance studying from home, in the new online format, while also trying to entertain two young school-aged children. This student was wondering about the status of classes for the remainder of the semester, and in my response I included a tip I read from a friend of mine who worked from home for 18 years.

Here is the official communication from the Provost:

The decision is final that we will continue in online-only mode until the end of semester because we can't expect the students to pick up and move back to campus mid-semester.

That said, I know that at least for all HWRS and ATMO classes, professors are instructed to record and post on D2L all of their Zoom lectures and class meetings so that students who are unable to attend synchronously can watch the recording at a time that is more convenient to them. Professors have also been asked to be compassionate, flexible, and understanding with student constraints. Please communicate your situation and challenges directly with your professors, and feel free to cc: me on these emails.

Also, I don't know if this will be helpful given the age, personalities, and dynamics of your kids, but a friend of mine shared this with other work-from-home parents and perhaps it could be helpful for you too:

"Tip for working from home with young kids..... (I worked FT from home for 18 years.) Kids may not understand the difference between you being physically accessible and you being available. I put a command hook on the outside of my office door with 3 signs, like a traffic light. They easily understood that the green light meant they could come on in and talk to me, that the red stop sign meant not to interrupt unless there was a fire or someone badly hurt, and the yellow triangle meant to knock very softly and wait patiently. It worked wonders for everyone, especially by reducing their confusion and frustration."

Let me know if you have additional questions. I am here to help and support you!
