Subject: Research Policies for Students and Postdocs

Dear CALS Undergraduate Students, Graduate Students and Postdocs:

The Provost and Senior Vice President for Research, Innovation and Impact have released guidance for managing research activities presently being conducted by undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs: https://research.arizona.edu/covid-19-guidance-research-students-postdocs

This communication and others pertaining to research are accessible from the research button on the University Coronavirus information page: https://www.arizona.edu/coronavirus-covid-19-information

The health, safety, and well-being of our community is our top priority. With this in mind, a primary objective is to minimize the number of undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs working on campus while continuing research operations to the extent possible given the circumstances. While at this time you are not prohibited from being on campus, it is strongly encouraged that as much work as possible be conducted remotely.

All undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs are being asked to work with their faculty research supervisors to develop a work plan that minimizes risk to themselves and colleagues, while sustaining research work to the highest extent possible. Because your faculty supervisor is most informed about how to proceed with developing these plans, we have asked them to take the lead in helping you develop a plan that could extend to the end of the semester.

This work plan should, at a minimum, include the means of communication with the supervisor, how often you will communicate, what technology is needed to support remote work, and a plan for continuing research projects to the extent possible, including addressing research milestones ranging from thesis deadlines to mandatory research sponsored reports that must be completed in a specific timeframe. Additional information is contained in the guidance document.

We highly encourage you to contact your supervisor as soon as possible to begin this process.

Finally, I'd like to extend our support to you all during this admittedly stressful time. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your supervisor, advisor, department head, or any of us with questions or concerns. Please remember to be kind to yourselves and others. We are all trying to do the best we can as we work together through this difficult time.

Please stay healthy and be safe.
