Subject: [rcschedulenews] Fall 2020 Updates from RCS

Hello Department Schedulers:

As announced from the Provost’s message (here<https://view.comms.arizona.edu/?qs=4c6454bd397f7ce440affd393914fb751134bdac7949432c47fc5a4b9d94471f8c60cac4005b4a6ff63d6c1381e2f11cfd4687c18ebfb54fb21cee0d8a03a209830a110977f6092a988f4da9c33bd5ba>) yesterday we will be doing a ‘slow ramp’ approach for in-person and flex in-person instruction. Which includes 3 stages, outlined in the memo and below.

Alex Underwood sent the request to Heads, Chairs, and Directors last week on determining the essential classes for Stage 1 on 7/22, the deadline for this information to be sent to Alex is tomorrow, 7/29 at 5pm.

RCS is reviewing current revised classroom density for distancing against total enrollment/capacity and making adjustments to room sizes where possible and where a room change is not possible, an RCS staff member will contact the department scheduler to determine the best course of action. Once we have the revised capacities settled we will move to the review of the appropriate stage for each class, that have not been assigned as Stage 1 - Essential. During all of this work we are also trying to complete section forms—will are working these forms in the order they are received and truly appreciate your patience during this time.

The stages will be issued as class notes and our goal is to have this work done by the end of this week, but will be coordinated based on student communication.

The reduced classroom density for centrally scheduled classrooms are online<https://www.registrar.arizona.edu/sites/registrar.arizona.edu/files/forms/REVISED%20Classroom%20Occupancy%20Numbers%207-7-20.xlsx> – please note that the reduced density is the total number of persons in the space at a time – you will need to adjust your class capacity to accommodate any additional instructors, preceptors, or TAs.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Description

Stage Explanation

Stage 1

Stage 1: Essential In-Person / Outdoor instruction on campuses

Beginning Monday, August 24, only Essential In-Person courses and those courses scheduled for outdoor spaces will be held in-person on our campuses. Essential In-Person courses will be determined by academic department and may include laboratory classes, studios and performer courses, as well as medicine, veterinary medicine and pharmacy courses, and some specialized small-cohort courses. Each Department will communicate to the Registrar which courses are in the Stage 1 Essential In-Person category, so that they can be represented accurately to students in the online Schedule of Classes.

All other planned In-Person and Flex in-person courses will proceed in remote and online (synchronous or asynchronous) modes during Stage 1.

Stage 2

Stage 2: Essential In-Person / Outdoor / Small In-Person courses on our campuses

The next stage of the reentry process will increase our campus presence with In-person and Flex In-Person classes with 30 or fewer students.

All other planned In-Person and Flex in-person classes will proceed in remote and online (synchronous or asynchronous) modes during Stage 2.

Stage 3

Stage 3: Larger in-person classes resume

Once Stage 2 operations are proceeding without complications, larger classes will be re-introduced on campus.
